Abstract

It is indisputable that foreign trade. which is historically the oldest and still important part of foreign economic relations. is one of the most important factors that affect the economic growth of both the national economy and the entire world economy. It is important to point out that foreign trade is not only a factor of dynamic development on the quantitative level. but also a significant factor from the point of view of structural changes of individual countries and complex international trade flows. After the chaotic events in the region in the 90s of the 20th century (breakup of the SFR Yugoslavia. War conflicts. sanctions. etc.). at the beginning of the 21st century. Serbia had to adapt to new economic laws and tendencies. as well as to start implementing a complex process of modernization of its economy. It is a very complex procedure that involved economic and production restructuring and adaptation to the laws and principles of a free economy and open market. The concept of relying on foreign trade cooperation is becoming a cornerstone and lever for the growth and development of the Serbian economy. The aim of the paper is to point out the importance of improving foreign trade as a lever for stable development and modernization of the national economy.
